چکیده

Background The USCI PDA Umbrella is a device to close patent ductus arteriosus (PDA) by a transcatheter technique. Human clinical trials have shown excellent efficacy in reducing or eliminating the PDA shunt, but concerns remain about the risk of infection with this device. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the risk of infection using an animal model. Methods and Results Susceptibility to developing endocarditis was tested by injecting a single intravenous dose of group L streptococcus. Ten piglets with a closed ductus served as controls. Two of these developed valvular vegetations. PDA was produced in 19 animals by balloon dilation of the ductus. Seven of 7 animals with PDA at the time of bacterial injection developed endarteritis of the ductus and valvular vegetations. A PDA Umbrella was placed in the remaining 12 animals, and bacteria were injected 2 weeks after device implantation. Infection was evident in the PDA Umbrella only in the single animal in which the Umbrella had embolized and been left in the left pulmonary artery. Three of the remaining 11 piglets

Transcatheter closure of patent ductus arteriosus.

More than three decades have passed since the introduction of transcatheter devices for closure of patent ductus arteriosus, and many occluders have been made available since then. The ideal requirements of any procedure are a user-friendly technique, optimum success rate, no residual anomaly, minimal morbidity/mortality, and comparability or superiority to the existing conventional modality of...

Intravenous Paracetamol and Patent Ductus Arteriosus Closure

Background: Standard medical treatments for patent ductus arteriosus (PDA) closure are, including indomethacin/ibuprofen and surgical ligation. Nowadays, a new strategy to close PDA is the use of paracetamol. The present study aimed to describe the use of intravenous (IV) paracetamol for PDA closure in neonates who present a contraindication to ibuprofen or ibuprofen failure with no possibility...

Sequential Transcatheter Closure of a Patent Ductus Arteriosus and a Muscular Ventriculer Septal Defect in a Child

Due to the developing technology in pediatric catheterization and increasing experience of pediatric cardiologists, currently transcatheter closure of multiple cardiac defects has become available. The present case report describes a patient who successfully underwent sequential transcatheter closure of patent ductus arteriosus (PDA) and muscular ventricular septal defect (VSD). Transcatheter c...

Patent ductus arteriosus in a lamb: A case report

Patent ductus arteriosus (PDA) is a persistent patency of a vessel normally present in the fetus that connects the pulmonary arterial system to the aorta. The ductus arteriosus fails to close at birth when breathing commences and placental blood circulation is removed. Closure of the ductus arteriosus arises in response to decline pulmonary vascular resistance and increased systemic vascular re...

Transcatheter Closure of Patent Ductus Arteriosus Using the Amplatzer Duct Occluder.

The Amplatzer duct occluder (ADO) (AGA Medical Corp., Golden Valley, MN) is designed to meet criteria for an optimal transcatheter technique for closure of a patent ductus arteriosus. It was developed as an alternative to surgical closure and other interventional techniques. It is not technically complex, allows controlled deployment, is retrievable and repositionable, and has a low risk of emb...

Transcatheter closure of the patent ductus arteriosus.

Patent ductus arteriosus (PDA) is one of the most common congenital heart defects. Although surgery is still required in symptomatic neonates, the majority of older infants and children can undergo safe and effective transcatheter device closure on an out-patient basis. First described in 1967, over the past four decades, numerous devices have been specifically developed for this purpose. This ...
